Dungan Village Visit & Family Dinner

We dare you to leave hungry!

Go on a cultural and culinary journey to an ethnic Dungan village outside of Karakol. A local Dungan family will welcome you to their home to celebrate the diversity of Dungan cuisine over an elaborate home-cooked meal. Learn the fascinating story of why this Muslim Chinese group immigrated to the region 140 years ago, how they made the area their home, and how families today keep their traditional culture and cuisine alive.

Tour Highlights

  • Taste at least 8 kinds of home-cooked Dungan dishes in a family home.*
  • Make your own ashlan-fu, the most famous (and delicious!) Dungan dish.
  • Deepen your understanding of Dungan culture and history on a 30-minute village walking tour. Take in local stories and legends on a visit to the museum and mosque.

* Vegetarian food is available upon request. Inform us in advance (upon booking request) if you or anyone in your group has any food allergies.

What Others Say About This Tour

"I’ve long been convinced that there’s no better way to discover a culture than through its food. The evening spent with the Dungan people in Yrdyk was the perfect introduction to their culture, and — to an extent — to the history of this part of the world, shaped by the never ending cycle of exile, migration, and interchange."

Margherita Ragg

"Make sure you are hungry before you come as this family’s goal is to make sure you leave not wanting to eat again for the rest of the day. It was definitely our favourite thing to do in the Issyk-Kul region."

Alesha & Jarryd
